Michie "Matador" Munoz

Danger-Fire Promotions was well represented this weekend with two of their best boxers competing in major fights. On Friday night in Tahoe, NV, Michi “The Matador” Munoz suffered his first lost in a bid for the NABO Middleweight Title against hometown hero and current title holder Joey Gilbert of NBC’s “The Contender”. Munoz taking the fight on eight days notice and fighting and an elevation of 6000 feet proved to be the determining factor of the outcome. Munoz began with a strong first round landing the stronger more effective punches while moving nicely and showing incredible speed with combinations to the body and head. By the second round Munoz was already beginning to show signs of breathing difficulty due to the high altitude. Though showing signs of fatigue, Munoz‘s spirited effort had the capacity crowd on their feet throughout the fight. Munoz had many great moments in the bout and gained a second wind in the 5th round enabling him to out work his opponent earning him another round. However, the sixth round on showed Gilbert simply out hustling the undefeated contender. In the end, Munoz fought an incredibly courageous fight in a high-profile situation and should be commended on his effort. He gained much respect from the boxing community and showed all of the skills necessary to become a World Champion. The fight was a valuable learning experience for the 25 year old Munoz giving him even more motivation to achieve his goal of a World Title at his appropriate jr. middleweight division.
